Climbing the exotic Chutes and Ladders trail

Tom’s experience at Chutes and Ladders:

Chutes and Ladders is a really fun but very dangerous adventure along the coast of Maui. The trailhead is a little difficult to find but the hike is not very long.
Chutes and Ladders Trail

You start hiking through some over growth on a dirt road. This will lead to a fork, take the left fork and it will lead directly to the ocean.

Chutes and Ladders Hike

The coast is very steep and rocky. You will need to carefully climb down to a small trail along the ocean. When we went there were some worn ropes that were put up to assist people down.

Be careful and test the ropes before putting your body weight on the ropes. The climb is not overly difficult but a fall will lead to a serious injury and most likely death.

Once you reach the bottom of the climb there is a trail that is narrow in one spot but pretty easily followed. I would recommend good shoes for this adventure. The lava rock is sharp and the trail can be slippery.

Follow the trail around the cliffs and it will lead to a small pool that you can swim in. Be careful if the ocean is high enough to spill into the pool if you do swim in it that you don’t get carried away out to the ocean.

Also there is a sign near the beginning of the trailhead saying the trail is dangerous and not to go down. Use your own judgement.

Tom’s Rating:

Trail Info: The trailhead is difficult to find. It is along highway 30 in between Lahaina and the Nakalele Blowhole. There is a small pullout along the street just after mile marker 37.5 on the coast side. Park here and there are a few signs warning you to not trespass and to be careful along the dangerous cliffs.
