Explore the rugged Glacier Lake in the Wallowa Mountains

Tom’s experience Backpacking to Glacier Lake in the Wallowa Mountains:

Glacier Lake is a beautiful lake in the Wallowa Mountains that sits directly under Eagle Cap Mountain. Hike to Glacier Lake

When we visited here in the end of July the Mosquitoes were terrible at the lower lakes and Glacier Lake was covered in snow.

Glacier Lake Oregon

The trail head for the lake is the Wallowa Lake Trailhead just south of Wallowa Lake State Park. The same trailhead for Ice Lake. There are permits at the trailhead that are free for entering the back country.

The trail begins by following the West Fork of the Wallowa River as you head deeper into the wilderness.

The trail really isn’t too steep although you are hiking uphill the whole way to the lake.

You will reach a fork that if you wanted to create a loop hike and see various lakes you could.

The forks are well signed and easy to follow. There are a number of waterfalls that you will pass as long as you keep your eyes open.

Eventually you will reach Frazier lake which is lower than Glacier lake so if you go early in the season there might be better camping at Frazier.

As you pass the trail will get a little more rocky as you climb your way to Glacier lake.

Glacier lake is a beautiful lake and has a few islands in the lake which are very photogenic. Dogs are allowed on this trail.

Trail Info: The trailhead starts just south of Wallowa State Park. Parking is free and there are outhouses and picnic tables right near the parking. The Parking can fill up on popular weekends. Permits for the trail are at the trailhead.
