Discover the Red Cliffs Recreation Area Nature Trail

Tom’s Experience hiking the Red Cliffs Recreation Area Nature Trail:

This red cliffs hike is a pretty fun area to explore. It is also known as the Red Reef Trail. I have always loved streams that run through red sandstone. I think the blue water makes a fun contrast against the red rocks and sand. It could be one of the best Southern Utah hikes.

St. George Hikes

This trail starts in the Red Cliff Campground and is easy to follow with only a mild elevation gain. It follows the stream all the way up the canyon and you are able to walk past a few small waterfalls.

Towards the end of the main trail there is a waterfall and the trail continues along the steep sandstone with footholds dug out of the rock with a rope to help maintain your balance. It isn’t too difficult to get past this point but you may want to supervise children.

After this, the trail ends due to a pool of water covering the canyon floor. However you may continue hiking up the canyon if you want to get wet or are fairly good at rock climbing.

If the temperature is warm enough you can swim in the pools or slide down some of the waterfalls. Dogs are allowed on this trail but must be leashed.

Tom’s Rating:

Trail Info: Total length of the trail is about 1 mile round trip depending on how far up the canyon you travel. To get to the trailhead you will take I-15 north from St. George to exit 22. Turn right onto Old Highway 91 and follow that 2 miles south and turn right again at the sign pointing to Red Cliffs Recreation Area. The right turn is across from the KOA. Follow the road 1.3 miles to the campground and the trail is easy to find there. It costs $5 per vehicle for day use in the area.

GPS: Trailhead = 37.224793,-113.406222

I’ve heard this river dries up after summer. We are coming down the end of October and want to hike this. Is it usually dried up by then?
